The CARDINAL MARCHING BAND celebrates over 100 years of music and excitement, representing Otterbein University on and off campus. Comprised of students coming from nearly every major on campus, this ensemble has performed for campus athletic events, NFL football games, alumni and trustee events for Otterbein Presidents, tailgate parties for Ohio Governors and US Presidential candidates, Westerville block parties, and Honor Flights departing from John Glenn Columbus International Airport.
The band's style has been described as a balance between corps-inspired marching and crowd-friendly music selections.

August 2025 HOUSING INFORMATION:
One GIANT perk of being a member of the Cardinal Marching Band is that you will move into your permanent campus housing at registration for camp... which is over a week before the rest of campus moves in for New Student Weekend!!!
Drumline, Auxiliary, Woodwinds, and Brass: Specific camp check-in times will be announced closer to move-in (Wednesday, August 13). Representatives from Campus Life/Housing and the Band Staff will be available to help you find your dorm room, secure a meal bracelet, and/or get back to Battelle for percussion placement auditions or signing out of school instruments.
Commuter/Non-resident students: Your check-in schedule is exactly the same, except you don't have to worry about moving into a room. Any questions can be answered by the band staff at check-in.
You'll have just enough time to drop your gear into your room and move on to the next event. It's wise to have a band camp "go bag", then pick away at setting up your room throughout the week.

The Band Fee:
Every member of the Cardinal Marching Band is charged a course fee of $140 to help defray the cost of band camp and support the regular maintenance of instruments and uniforms. This will appear on your Fall semester tuition statement.
If you have any questions about this fee, please contact Dr. Yonchak.

New and Prospective Members: Auditioning for the Cardinal Marching Band
Auxiliary members (twirlers and colorguard) should look above for contact info for staff
Prospective/Returning drumline members will all audition for placement following check-in at band camp.
Prospective hornline members (woodwinds and brass) should make a simple solo audio or video recording of you playing your high school's fight song and alma mater. These recordings do not need to be ultra high quality - they give us an idea of what you can do on your instrument with excerpts you likely already know. Please email these files to Dr. Yonchak. If you have done an on-site audition for the music department on your intended instrument, that audition will cover you for this requirement.
In all cases, students auditioning for the athletic band award ($1000/year renewable up to 4 years), need to have their materials in or a live audition completed prior to or during the month of April. Students submitting materials AFTER April can still participate in the Cardinal Marching Band, but will not be eligible for the AB award until the FOLLOWING season - this deadline is set by Admissions and Financial Aid, not the Band. Please contact Dr. Yonchak with any questions.
